John Davis, colored, was arrested th;s afternoon in front of the old Market House with a bag on his shoulder con taining a sail which Joe Johnson, col ored, asserts that the aforesaid Davis stole from his sail boat. Davis, the al leged culprit, is now securely lodged in the Guard House where he will await the Mayor's decision in the matter at half-past 9 o'clock in the morning. A flew Car Burned . A ne w express and baggage car at the Carolina Central depot in Charlotte was burned yesterday morning, about 3 o'clock. The alarm was given when the fire was discovered but another alarm was given out in the city and the engines turned back when within two blocks of the depot. The car was entirely burned, all except the platform and air brakes. The origin of the fire is unknown as it is said that the fire in the stove in the car had been . carefully. . ; put out. The Hcssenger run of 3 hours and 45 minutes between 'Wilmington and Wel don, exclusive of stoppages, or 3:55 in all, was beaten a few days ago by engineer IfcSween. He made the run between the termini of the Wilmington and Wel don R. R. in 3 hours and 45 minutes, in cluding four stoppages, making the act ual running time 3 hours and 35 minutes. TVtt. Hessenger no doubt conld have done the same, as lie ran the last fifty miles of the road on schedule time. The engius used in making these runs were made the shops in this city. in Ilea thy. Capt. H.-VanBokkelen, President of the Chamber of Commerce; has ex tended an invitation to the - members of the Chamber and Produce Exchange and the subscribers thereto, to ,cal at his residence on the 1st day of . January, at 1 o'clock, sharp. The gentlemen pres ent at the Rooms of the Exchange on New Year's Day, at 12:30, will start at that hour to make the above call. It is presumed there will be a fall business meeting on this occasion of the annual reunion of the members , of our two most important commercial bodies. Only three-quarters of the sun will be obscured from the most favorable standpoint, the North Atlantic and Westcrn Earope THs is the second eclipse of the sun, visible in this country, this year, the last occurring January lltb, when it was total in California. The partial eclipse thi3 month will occur between 7 and 8 o'clock in the morning, The next total eclipse of the sun in the United States will occur May 28th, 1900, when the shadow of the moon will pass from New Orleans to the ocean at Norfolk $ A large number of people cow living mil not have an opportunity of observ ing that spectacle. Anybody who wants to see a total eclipse of the sun in the near future will have to go to the Isthmus of Suez in May, 1882. I Dr Scliaff's Lectnrr. An audience, not very large, but cer tiinly very appreciative, was present in tie First Presbyterian Church last even ing to bear the address announced by ifev. Philip Schaff, D. D., on the re vision of the Bible and a history of the various translations which have been made. The reverend gentleman was lis tened to with marked interest through oat his entire discourse. He is himself an author of distinguished ability and is well qualified to speak of the subject matter of his address. The revision of the New Testament, which has just been completed by a body of divines of knowl edge and ability, chosen froai various branches of the Church, will be publish ed early in February, by the University prases of England, at Oxford and Cam bridge. Dr. Schaffer is Chairman of the American branch of the Bible Revision Coinmittee. New Tokk, December, 1880 i I Tae American Bible Revision Com mittee have completed the revision of the English version of the New Testa ment and transmitted the result of their labors to England. The University Presses of Oxford and Cambridge are ex pected to issue the revised New Testa ment in February, 1881. TheOldTes taruct will be published two or three years later. The American Revisers have given their time and labor for eight years with out compensation. The necessary ex penses ha veljeen provided for by volun tary subscriptions. Every friend of the great undertaking who will contribute towards the expenses ten dollars, or more, before the first of March next, will receive a memorial copy of the first University Edition of the Revised New Testament, handsome ly bound and inscribed. " ' Accident to Mr. Parsley. We regret to learn that Mr. O. G. Parsley, Jr., met with quite a serious ac cident yesterday, owing to the fact; that his crutch slipped while he was going down stairs which'caased him to be pre cipitated to the bottom of the stair-case, bruising him quite severely. About three years ago J. McRee Lane, then but a stripling, not more than sixteen years of age shipped from this port be fore the mast on a brig bound for a long voyage. Unlike most youngsters who were raised with tho tenderness Mac Lane had received home, he stuck like a man to tho choice .ho had made for a vocation 4n life.
